ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEW! In the Pre-K -5th grade section of the blog, there is a suggestion for a family activity related to the lesson. This would be a great jumping off point to talk about the lesson from Sunday. 

Family Worship Sunday: Mark your calendars, our next Family Worship Sunday is October 30th at the 11am service. Many of our church families will be at the CoaH Retreat so there is only one service this Sunday.  On Family Worship Sundays your kids (Pre-K through 5th grade) will be taking a break from their regular CoaH Kids curriculum and joining everyone in the larger gathering for worship.  Read about Family Worship Sunday here.

NURSERY

9AM Nursery: Children ages 0 -1 yrs old are welcome to come play in the nursery at this service. There is a separate class for 2 - 3 yr olds during this service. We provide cheerios for children over age 1 (unless specified by parents) and we try to spend a little bit of time reading the Bible story books. 

11AM Nursery: Children ages 0-3 yrs old are welcome to come play in the nursery at this service. We provide cheerios during Bible story reading time for children 1 yr and older!

Please bring a labelled water cup for your child to use during the nursery. If you've forgotten a label, the check-in coordinator would be happy to print out a label for you!

 ***IMPORTANT*** We have severe allergies in our nursery-aged kids. We'll have a Cheerios snack (for ages 1 yrs old and up) during Bible story time, but please don't give your child a bagel or other snack when you are checking them in. We clean our toys regularly, but we don't like to take chances.

 

2 - 3 YEAR OLDS

October Theme: Only God is Big - a story about sin in the garden from Genesis 3

From the parent take-home page: Remind your children that God said, "No. Do not eat this fruit." But the man and the woman ate the fruit. They did not obey God.

When you tell your child "no" and your child disobeys, make sure that your child understands that this is wrong. 

Ask your child, "Can you make a tree?" Then say "No, only God can make a tree."  

Throughout the week make statements like "Only God is sooooo big" or "Only God is sooooo strong." Then thank God that He is so big! (A Sure Foundation, 2005)

 

PRE-K - 5TH GRADE

This Week's Story: Jesus Was Anointed, Matt 26:6-13; Mark 14:3-9; John 12:1-8

Memory Verse: Romans 10:9 "...if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

Summary: This week in The Gospel Project® for Kids, our journey takes us to Matthew 26:6-13; Mark 14:3-9; and John 12:1-8. Each of these accounts notes Jesus’ anointing six days before Passover. Jesus was in Bethany, eating supper at Simon the leper’s house. Since lepers were social outcasts, Simon may have been healed from his leprosy by Jesus. Jesus and His disciples attended the supper, as did Jesus’ friends Lazarus, Martha, and Mary.

While Jesus was reclining at the table, Mary broke open an expensive alabaster jar of pure nard, a fragrance imported from India. Alabaster was an expensive form of marble. Alabaster jars were intricately crafted and sealed so that to open the jar, the owner would have to break it, and the perfumes or oils within the jar would be used immediately. Mary could not pour out a little bit of the nard and keep the rest for herself. Out of sincere and total devotion, Mary poured all of the nard onto Jesus.

In stark contrast to Mary’s display of love, Judas Iscariot reacted with indignation. In Matthew’s account, the other disciples also wondered why Mary had not sold the nard—worth about a worker’s yearly wage—and given it to the poor. John states that Judas was not altruistic; Judas was in fact pilfering money from Jesus’ ministry. (See John 12:6.)

“Leave her alone,” Jesus said. “She has kept it for the day of My burial” (John 12:7). The disciples would have plenty of time to minister to the poor, but Jesus would die in less than a week. Mary probably had no way of knowing what her offering of love and devotion would have signified, but Jesus said that from that moment on, people would remember what she had done for Him.

Christ Connection: Unlike the rich young ruler who thought the cost of following Christ was too high (Mark 10:22), Mary believed that Jesus holds more value than costly perfume. Mary’s actions were not wasteful but worshipful. By allowing Mary to anoint Him, Jesus showed that He is more valuable than anything. Jesus knew He would soon die for sinners, be buried, and rise from the dead on the third day. Those who trust in His death and resurrection will receive eternal life.

Family Activity Suggestion: Guide your family to stand in a circle and close their lips. Taking turns, each person should turn to the person on her left and say, “(Name), if you love me, would you please smile?” If a person smiles, he must sit down. The last person standing wins! Discuss ways that we show our love for others. Read Mark 14:3-9 together. Remind kids that Mary worshiped Jesus with the perfume because she loved Him and knew He was more valuable than anything she had. Discuss ways that we can worship Jesus.

• What did Mary do with the oil? (She poured it on Jesus’ head and anointed Him)
• Did Jesus’ friends think Mary made a good choice? (no, they were upset with Mary)
• What did Jesus say about what Mary did? (Mary did a good thing. People will remember what Mary did for Him)
• BP Question: What does it mean to honor Jesus? Honoring Jesus means to treat Him with respect.

Older Kids Review Questions

• What did Mary pour on Jesus’ head? (very expensive oil, Matt 26:7)
• Who said Mary should have sold the oil and given the money to the poor? (the disciples, Matt 26:8-9)
• What did Jesus say about what Mary did? (She had done a very good thing; she anointed His body for burial; what she had done would be told in memory of her, Matt 26: 10, 12-13)
